Hikrokazu Kore-eda / S Korea 2022 / 129 min / 12A / Subtitles
Broker is Japanese director Kore-eda’s (Shoplifters) first Korean
production with Song Kang-Ho (Palme d’Or 2022) giving a stellar
performance in the lead role. In Kore-eda’s capable hands this
film, about some misfits who make up a family of sorts, turns into
a delightful, bittersweet drama – handling tough subjects with a
light touch. Whatever their reasons, they are involved in finding
the best possible adoptive families for orphaned or abandoned
babies, at a price of course, while being pursued by some fanatic
cops. “Broker keeps on getting funnier and knottier as secret
motives are revealed, sympathies shift, mysteries deepen and
dangers multiply”, Nicholas Barber, (BBC) giving it a 5* rating.
