Pawo Choyning Dorji / Bhutan 2019 / 109 min / PG / Subtitles
Shot in staggeringly beautiful locations, Bhutan’s first-ever Oscar
nominated film captures a poetic sense of place and character as
it follows young teacher Ugyen. While dreaming of becoming a
singer in Australia, he is reluctantly sent from the modern capital
to the most remote school on earth. The tiny Himalayan village of
yak herders, an 8 day trek from the nearest road, has no Wi-Fi, no
electricity, no textbooks, not even a blackboard, but a room full of
children eager to learn, and a natural respect for all teachers, who
“touch the future”. Balancing gentle humour with life-affirming drama, this is an entertaining, irresistibly uplifting tale.
